Performance rating, general
A rating is awarded only for a test run under Clause 6, only for the conditions tested, and never where penetration exceeds 25 metres.
Basis. The public preview stops before this clause; the page states the published structure and the public guidance. The clause number and defined terms are the standard's; the explanation is our own.
What clause 7.1 asks
Clause 7.1 is the general part of the performance rating. The rating follows the test method in Clause 6. It records the performance of the barrier under the specific conditions of that test, not a general capability of the product. The scope and Clause 4 both state the outer limit: where the vehicle penetrates more than 25 metres beyond the datum line, no performance rating is awarded. The public contents show the general part and the classification code; the full wording of 7.1 is not in the preview, so this record states only what the scope, Clause 4 and the structure establish.
Why it matters
A rating is a conditional statement. It is true for the vehicle, mass, speed, angle, barrier configuration and foundation that were tested. It is not a warranty that the barrier will perform in every installation, and it is not a certification of the product or the manufacturer. The buyer who treats the rating as a property of the brand will over-specify in one place and under-specify in another. The buyer who treats it as a set of conditions can compare products honestly and can see what has to be re-tested when the site changes.
What good looks like
Store the rating with its conditions: the report, the vehicle, the speed, the angle, the penetration, the debris and the configuration. Use the same conditions in the specification and the assurance statement. When a site condition changes, ask whether the rating still covers it before reusing the number.
Evidence an assessor asks for
The reviewer will ask what the rating would be if the vehicle or the angle changed. If no one can answer, the rating is being used as a badge rather than a measurement.
- Rating statement The rating and the conditions it depends on, taken from the test report
- Condition set The vehicle, mass, speed, angle, configuration and foundation that were tested
- Report link A link from the rating to the full report and its drawings
- Limitation note A plain statement of what the rating does not cover
Where it commonly fails
- The rating is quoted without the vehicle class or the speed
- A product is described as "ISO 22343-1 rated" with no configuration or foundation
- A rating is treated as a certification of the manufacturer
- A penetration beyond 25 metres is described as a rating with a long stop
What to do before the amendment publishes
Rewrite each rating statement in the estate to include the conditions and the limitation. Remove any claim that the rating certifies the product.
