Answer

What is ISO 22343-1:2023?

It is the published International Standard for the impact performance of a vehicle security barrier, the test method and the performance rating. It was published in September 2023, runs to 55 pages, and cancelled and replaced IWA 14-1:2013. Amendment 1 is at FDIS and will amend it.

Last updated: . Written from the public record and the published base standard. Not legal advice; does not certify.

What the standard does

It sets the outcome a barrier must achieve when a test vehicle hits it, the method for running that test and the code that records the result. It is written for manufacturers and procurers, and it is used by test houses, security consultants and site owners.

What changed from IWA 14-1

The foreword says the 2023 edition was brought into line with modern technology and practice, that all figures were reviewed and surface-placed barriers were explicitly identified, that the report now records the furthest part of the vehicle beyond the datum, and that the text and structure were reviewed for clarity.

What it does not do

It gives no design guidance and no operational suitability guidance. Selection, installation and use are covered by ISO 22343-2:2023. It is not a certification scheme and it does not cover blast, ballistic or manual attack.

Why the edition matters

A specification that says ISO 22343 without an edition is ambiguous. The 2023 edition is the published text, and Amendment 1 will change it. Name the edition and the amendment status in every contract and schedule.

Questions

Is it the same as PAS 68?

No. PAS 68 is a British specification with its own rating form and a 25 kg debris threshold. ISO 22343-1 uses a 2 kg threshold and a different rating code. A PAS 68 rating is not an ISO 22343-1 rating.

Is it the same as IWA 14-1?

ISO 22343-1 replaced IWA 14-1:2013, which was technically revised. The two are related but not interchangeable, and an old IWA rating is not converted by assertion.

Is it free?

No. The published standard is sold by ISO through national standards bodies. This site paraphrases the public record and does not reproduce the text.
