Normative references

ISO 22343-1:2023, Clause 2Amends ISO 22343-1:2023Retrieved 20 October 2026

Six documents are normative: the vocabulary, two concrete standards, two concrete testing standards and the photographic instrumentation standard.

Basis. The public preview carries this clause. The clause number and defined terms are the standard's; the explanation is our own.

What clause 2 asks

The clause points to ISO 22300 for vocabulary, to the ASTM and EN concrete documents for test pieces and their strength, and to SAE J211/2 for photographic instrumentation. ASTM C31/C31M deals with field specimens; ASTM C39/C39M-18 with cylinder strength; EN 12390-2 with specimen preparation and curing; EN 12390-3 with hardened concrete strength; SAE J211/2 with the cameras used in impact work. A dated reference binds the edition named. An undated one binds the latest edition, amendments included.

Why it matters

The references are where a test report can quietly fail. A foundation test on concrete that was not cured to the cited method, or a high-speed camera set up without the cited instrumentation practice, gives a result that is hard to defend even when the barrier behaved as intended. The vocabulary reference matters too, because ISO 22300 supplies terms the rest of the document assumes. The list is short, which makes it easy to check and easy to overlook: six documents, each with an edition, each capable of changing the validity of a test if it is the wrong one.

What good looks like

Keep a reference register for the test programme. Record the edition of each standard the test house used, the certificate or report that shows it, and the date it was checked. Where a reference is undated, check whether a newer edition has appeared before the test, not after. Ask the test house to state the edition in the report.

Evidence an assessor asks for

A reviewer will check the reference register against the report. A report that does not name the editions it used invites a challenge to the whole result.

  • Reference register Each normative reference, its edition, and where the test house holds it
  • Concrete records Curing and compressive strength records tied to the cited ASTM or EN method
  • Camera and instrumentation record The SAE J211/2 practice followed, with the camera positions and frame rates
  • Edition check A dated note for each undated reference confirming the edition in force at the test

Where it commonly fails

  • A newer ASTM edition is used without checking whether the dated reference permits it
  • Concrete cube results are supplied with no curing record
  • The high-speed cameras are described by model only, with no frame rate or calibration
  • The vocabulary reference is ignored and a term is used in its ordinary sense instead of the defined one

What to do before the amendment publishes

Ask the test house for its reference register and compare it with the clause. Fill the gaps before the next test, not during the review.
